Choosing a Facebook Page Category

So my social adventure begins...

Setting up a new page on Facebook was very easy. It was harder to set up a general marketing e-mail addressed and get access through them with IT.

So, went onto the general facebook.com and followed the link on the bottom right corner for Create a Page. It then takes you to a link where you need to choose between a Community Page or an Official Page. The difference between them being that you can create a community page for a cause that you support or anything else that you can think of really.

If you are looking to launch an official page for you organisation, then the Official Page is the route you want to follow. You do need to be the official representative for your business.

You then have to choose what the Official Page is for and you get given certain categories, with a drop down list for each of them: Local business, Brand, product or organisation and Artist, band or public figure. The drop down list then allows you to choose your area of operating.

The difference between these categories is the way your Page will be laid out by Facebook once it is created.

Facebook has defaulted what tabs and boxes you need on your Page as an artist or as a business or a brand. You can change these anyway later and customize your page, but the category you choose at this stage cannot be changed later unless you delete your page and create another one, losing all of your fans (the people who like your facebook page and follow your entries).

The only time you and your "fans" will come across the distinction between an organisation, brand or local business is when the search results display in a Facebook search for a key word.

This goes the same with the Page name. You can choose the same page name with an already existent Page.

After providing an e-mail address, then your page is created. You just have to go into your e-mail inbox and confirm it.

Next post:

will be on creating an attached individual profile to your page.
