.... in Manhattan! And it's still just as fantastic to wake up to the views. That's the best bit of a holiday. You don't get to wear off or take things for granted cause you're not staying for too long. So all of your experiences are real, you enjoy them ever single time with the same amount of pleasure.
So on Tuesday, after a failed attempt to go to the MET, we decided to go to Liberty Island and see the Statue of Liberty.
The MET was that day's epic fail because they don't allow you in with any food (as opposed to Guggenheim Museum where they just tell you have to leave your bag, free of charge in their care). No sir, not at the MET. So bin the food or come back another day. Since we had just packed for the entire day worth of food and snacks, we decided to make better use of our time instead of spending with people who didn't want us.
So we headed on the subway to South Ferry station and after an airport type security check, we boarded the ferry to the Statue of Liberty.
This has been a life-long dream for me to and see. If there would have been one thing in New York for me to see, it would have been this. The only way to describe it would be "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkk!!!!!!!!!!!".
It was a gorgeous cruise, a sunny day, I took 600 photos in a few hours. We sat down in a shade and had our lunch with an even more spectacular view of Manhattan than the one in Central Park (which I already thought was fantastic).
Poor P. got a pink tan because there was simply hardly any shade for him to go under and he just catches the sun like a bad sunburn, when in fact he is alright.
We headed back on the ferry and after refreshening at the hotel for a bit, we went out for a walk in Soho, Little Italy and then Chinatown. Chinatown proved to be very quiet for the buzzing atmosphere that we expected and so we decided to experience Little Italy and an Italian dish.
I had the best pasta I have ever had, as well as the biggest portion I have ever been served so I couldn't actually physically finish it - calamari and baby squid, with spaghetti pasta in a white sauce. P. had spaghetti meatballs in a lovely thought of re-enacting "Lady and the Tramp"'s scene of dinner eating.
And that was our Tuesday.
After that day we felt so tired and so run over by the train, that we decided to have a bit of a more holiday day on Wednesday. We woke up late, we had a late breakfast, we weren't stressing about where to go cause we decided to go shopping and for a stroll around without much particular purpose.
We went to Macy's and had a proper shoe fight around one of the sales rooms with a scary amount of people. But I bought some amazing shoes at an even more amazing price. The store is "the world's biggest store" (according to them) so we went all the way up to the 9th floor to have a wonder around. We came across some amazing escalators, that were from 1902 and kept in such a good condition because they were still operating, all made of wood and narrower that gave you a nice impression of intimacy.
After that, we sat down and had some Starbucks, looking at the buzzing store below us and taking in the great atmosphere.
We left Macy's in search for the Manhattan Mall, to go and have a look at Victoria's Secret store. The Mall was quite dingy and disappointing compared to our expectations of what an US Mall should be like.
We then decided to walk on 5th Avenue and went towards Flatiron district cause the building is freaking famous and awesome! On the way there, came across a $2 T-Shirt with I (heart) NY - the one any only and picked that one up, then came across the NYC Sex Museum. We only had a look around the shop and didn't actually go in, but it was really cool.
After taking photos of the Flatiron building, we headed towards the nicer end of 5th Avenue after realising we should be seeing a lot more famous shops and brands and concluded we are in the bad part of 5th.
After another tube ride, we arrived at the corner of Central Park and 5th, where we understood just how far we were of the "posh" end of 5th Avenue. This was the end with an Apple Store, Louis Vuitton, Bergdorf Goodman (a Harrods equivalent?), Gucci, Abercrombie and Fitch and the Trump Tower, just to name a few. I had to go in and look at the very good looking and good smelling guys in Abercrombie and it proved all worth it.
Had a hot dog at the Pulitzer Fountain and then we headed to P's one and favourite part of this trip - going to the NHL store, powered by Reebok on Avenue of the Americas. This was a very emotional and excited P, going around all the ice hockey gear and fan products. He got a Detroit Red Wings away jersey and got himself photographed with the Lord Stanley Cup in the store. He was so happy I thought he was going to explode.
After such a long day, but a lot more entertaining and fun, more relaxing and definitely feeling a bit more the holiday stress free spirit, we had a quick change back at the hotel and went out very close by in a place called Lucy's a beach themed bar. In here we had the biggest portion of french fries, a chilli dog and 2 humongous drinks called beergaritas, which are of course a mix of margaritas and Corona beer, but in just very big glasses.
The atmosphere was really good, the food was great and the drinks just made us feel like we were on top of the world, with a great view of the Empire State building on top. And that, my friends, means calling it a night.
