I could be telling you how the entire UK is burried under snow or how all the buses stopped working in London, while only a few underground lines kept moving, about schools closing all over the country, accidents on all major highways or waiting times for dozens of minutes.
Instead, I will be talking about something else. How snow is white. And when you look over a white field, it looks almost smoky and you need to blink a few times before your eyes get used to all the light. It is also very quiet, incredibly and tangibly quiet when it snows. Everything slows down.
And I can always talk about the people. Some of them could not go to work, some of them chose to skip it. Others met especially for this romantic occasion. There are people who have to walk their dog, but instead of going alone, their loved one has joined this time, holding hands. Children have no school and parents get to spend some quality time with the family, while feeling young again, as they have last seen snow this big 20 years ago. The little ones enjoy sitting on the sleigh and being pulled through the snow by the big ones. I know I used to love it. It felt a little bit like flying, through all that snowing and surely the wind in your face helps.Whatever the situation is, the park is full of all these people and more. The giggles, the shouting of Innncommmmiiiiiiing!! Distant chatter can be heard everywhere and all that cold and going up the hill makes people have red cheeks and red noses. It’s people becoming human again, even if just for a few days.
In the night, there is this magic every where. It could be the warm light coming from the lamp posts in the park and the way snow flakes can only be seen in that part of the light. It’s like it’s snowing only in there, this wide circle around the lamp post. And then, you feel a snow flake on your nose and it immediately turns into water. Unless you’ve been outside for hours, enjoying the winter and your nose is so frozen that the snow flake is happy to have landed a place colder than he is.
Even the moon is hidden behind the big clouds, there is so much light all over the park, oddly enough, coming from the ground. Places that you would normally never see (such as a fence behind the dark trees) now become no mystery lit by the snow.
Snow is white. How can anybody be sad with all that white all around you? That’s why Snow is Magic. It makes people happy.
