Travelling on your own in a country where you don't know the language, where you're going or what the hell you're doing can be quite liberating.
You have to trust people - from asking directions to relying on you waiters food recommendations because you have no idea what to order.
You've got to speak to strangers - basically everyone's a stranger and you've got to speak to them for one reason or another
Get our of your comfort zone - the city you know, the streets you know, the all familiar way back home from tube or local pub. You're just requiring your brain, you're pulling your brain out and putting it in an uncomfortable situation
You're trying new things - from weird textured octopuses to new drinks, new high temperatures at 2am (18 degrees Celsius coming from the UK is just inconceivable)
And most if all, you're am outsider - even the tourists around are mostly in pairs, groups, some form of social reunion - and you're not. You don't even belong to the tourists... And it's the belonging that humans crave for so much. It's the belonging that makes your brain have a fit - why can't you just put me in a category?
And I think the older you get, the harder travelling on your own is... Because the older you get the more you want to be stuck in your own ways. And that's when the real challenging of your brain starts.
